The Vintage Violet Container: Reminiscing with Romantic Charm
Get Inspired Week 129
“I once wore nothing but violets all through one season, as a form of artistic mourning for a romance that would not die.” — Oscar Wilde
Some flowers just make you feel as if you’ve stepped back into a simpler, more romantic time. The Vintage Violet Container is a throwback to everything we love about old‑fashioned flowers, with dreamy blooms that feel both full of nostalgia and charm. In this post I’ll share the color story and styling ideas, and if you’d like the full plant list and layout, you’ll find the complete guide inside our spring container design course.

The Inspiration
For this container, I wanted a timeless mix of flowers that felt as if they’d just been picked from a cottage garden—soft, whimsical, and enchanting. Early spring darlings like snapdragons, violas, and ranunculus bring that nostalgic, romantic, effortless vibe without feeling too fussy.
Color Palette
For the Vintage Violet Container, I stayed in a tight family of moody purples, soft lilacs, and creamy whites to keep everything calm and romantic. The gentle pastels bring that fresh spring welcome, while the deeper violet blooms add a rich accent. A few touches of soft green foliage allow all of the colors to stand out, creating a palette that feels both elegant and understated.
What I love about a color story like this is that it creates charm without needing to be over the top. The effect is happy, fresh, and welcoming, which feels perfect for a spring container that celebrates the new season.
Layers and Textures
What makes this design feel so dreamy is the way the flowers are layered. Taller snapdragons float above, giving a soft sense of drama, while ranunculus fill the middle with mesmerizing blooms. The more rounded, larger flowers contrast beautifully with the taller stems topped with dainty bells. Around the edges, the lower growth and foliage overflow just enough to soften the rim, creating that loose, imperfectly perfect style.

Plant Highlights
A few plants in this design each bring something special to the overall vibe. I love how they work together to create that airy, layered spring feeling while still giving each bloom its own moment to dazzle.
Snapdragons
Snapdragons bring that subtle drama, with spires of blooms that add a little romance and charm without overwhelming the rest of the planting. Their vertical shape helps the whole container feel fuller and brings that soft cottage aura.
Ranunculus
Ranunculus are the showstoppers here—dreamy, ruffled blooms that look like they came straight out of a Victorian painting. They add that lush, elegant touch and make the Vintage Violet Container feel luxurious yet still inviting.
Violas
Violas are the sweet accent that gives this charming container its soft dimension. They tuck into every little gap, quietly tying the whole color story together with their more muted tones.
